Vernon, Florida was a place he had traveled to many times as a child with his grandfather. The trip was always an adventure filled with boiled peanuts, hoop cheese and cold soda waters.
He went back to Vernon 40 years later to see if the magic was still there. He didn’t find the eccentric folks portrayed by Errol Morris in his 1981 film “Vernon, Florida.” He found all the good memories from his childhood and more – he found Ms. Fannie Lou who opened the door and said, “Well don’t just stand there, come on in!”

BN Heard writes the “Cranks My Tractor” column for small newspapers and community magazines in the Deep South. Originally from Alabama, he now lives in Virginia’s Historic Triangle amongst Yankees who think they are living in The South.

Very enjoyable read about a small town and it's people. Makes you want to go there and meet the people, and enjoy life in a Southern small tow .
As a fan of BN Heard's stories, I was excited to have a chance to read this book.
I liked the imagery of the boy and his grandfather on their adventures to Vernon.
Mr. Heard takes us along with him on his trips back to Florida, i wish I was able to really meet Ms, Fannie Lou.
Read this book if you need to "go home" or just need to enjoy a slower pace of life for a while.
I look forward to more stories, Mr. Heard!
As a resident of Washington County Florida, I can attest to the words of BN HEARD. Ms. Fannie Lou Cranks My Tractor (and so does Vernon, Florida) is a well written chronicle of one man's love of the simple life as told thru short stories describing visits to the heart of the panhandle.
