In this book Lead Like Hell, author Daniel Blakeslee uses the discipleship analogy where Pastor Dan helps his new neighbor Mitch discover leadership principles. The first part of the book consists of the dialogue that occurs as one would meet, for example, an unbeliever and help them learn leadership principles based on the word of God. He uses a toolbox as a concrete image where it consists of three drawers that describe the types of leaders. They are described in being task oriented, people oriented, or mission driven. Each of these drawers are discussed in greater detail along with the introduction of the leadership styles.

The six leadership styles mentioned consist of tools in the toolbox to give a greater visual on the functionality of each style. They consist of the screwdriver, hammer, wrench, socket set, level, and measuring tape. Again, the function of each of these is given in greater detail. Each leadership style, Blakeslee states, is defined by how it performs these tasks:
– Listens to diagnose and solve problems
– Casts vision by setting goals
– Delegates
– Praises through feedback and rewards
– Disciples by training and developing others

The three Greek words –Poimen(Pastor/Shepherd),Episkopos(Bishop or overseer) and Prebuteros(Elder), describe a church leader in different situations. Whether one is in church leadership or leadership and a secular job, these principles can be helpful in how one executes themselves over a group of people. Pastor Daniel Blakeslee also served as a speaker, financial coach, and college professor. He entered the U.S. Navy upon high school graduation as an engineering supervisor and leadership development instructor.

If one is interested in better understanding how the emphasis and responsibilities change as one advances in leadership, then this is a book for you.

Great practical book on leadership. A few grammatical errors, but the book is self published from what I understand. If you're a pragmatic person like I am, this book is great for you. Blakeslee does a great job of laying out his plan and telling you how it works. Gives plenty of practical examples.
I was looking for some fresh ideas on leadership and this book was recommended to me. What a great and interesting read from author Daniel Blakeslee.

The story of Mitch, who is also looking for help with leadership due to struggles he is having with a new job. Mitch makes the acquaintance of Don, a gentleman in his neighborhood who also happens to be a well-known minister, and the two start to work on ideas from the Leader Code. The principles of the Leader Code are mostly biblical in nature and is presented to Mitch (and the reader) in a very straight-forward manner so is easy to understand and apply to today's work, family and church leadership scenarios. Don relates the Leader Code in the form of lessons in each chapter, such as what drives us as people, the different types of leadership styles, and useful leadership skills. The interaction between the two characters in the book, as student and teacher, make this very easy to follow and an enjoyable read. There are also examples of different situations and how they can be handled and I particularly enjoyed the chapter on the history of the code.

When the book description says that the Leader Code is taken from an ancient manuscript, he is of course referring to the Bible, so if this is something that you would have an issue with, this wouldn't be the book for you. I, however, really liked the fresh approach on Leadership and the biblical references and came away with new ideas on applying these principles to all areas of my life. A very refreshing and thought-provoking read for sure. Recommended.
This book provides practical advice for people looking to improve and/or understand the different types of leadership styles.

The explanations are discussed through a story between the meetings of Mitch and pastor Don. Don explains that leadership can be learned from the Bible and he calls these truths the Leader Code.

The explanation off Poimen, Episkopos, and Presbuteros are well laid out and easy to understand. Don relates each leadership style back to biblical leaders by reading the appropriate verse.

Towards the end of the book, tips are recommended for those three leadership types (such as how to manage people if you naturally pull from the Poimen drawer aka are task oriented).

Overall, this was a useful and insightful book. It provides much needed advice on how to lead by referencing wisdom from the New Testament.
